Worst Giants team since 1985?

With tonite's coulda-been -- a microcosm of '05 with poor defense, hardly-there clutch hitting, bad baserunning (exception: pitching OK) -- SF ends first half with 50 losses for first time since 1994  [at break that year: 39-50 (.438) 7 games out]; SF now has worst overall record at All-Star Break since 1985, the year team finished 62-100  [at break that year: 33-55 (.375) 16.5 games out].

4-3 loss vs STL   |   37-50 (.425) 10 games out

Difference between now and then: In 85, the Giants had a farm system to speak of and went to said system the following year to re-load.
Result? With an infield comprised of rookies Robbie Thompson and Will Clark and second-year starters Chris Brown and Jose Uribe, and with All-Star Chilli Davis and 20-game winner Mike Krukow turning in their finest seasons in SF, the team improved by 21 wins.
The following year, with even more spare parts available to trade, the Giants acquired Kevin Mitchell, Don Robinson, Craig Lefferts and Dave Dravecky in July and then Rick Reuschel in August and wound up winning 91 and a date with the Cards in the NLCS.
Have a hard time envisioning a similar turnaround with this aging team - and with no real prospects beyond the young guns Cain and Valdez.

I ain't ever heard no farming system - I just know I liked the original, unrevised post better.
